Positive Reinforcement Really Does Work!

It might sound like positive reinforcement is only good when the dog is behaving, but this is not the case. For example, if your dog is chomping on your favourite shoes, instead of yelling while taking the shoe from your dog, say NO in a firm voice while taking it away. This is a good first step, but for positive reinforcement to really work, you need to replace the shoe with something he is allowed to chew, and praise him for chewing that  toy. When you just do the first option of yelling and taking the shoe, the dog might not know WHY you are doing it. He might think you are just crazy for yelling, or a bully for taking away his toy. When you give the dog something else as replacement, he will see that one is acceptable and one is not.

Many Uninformed owners think that negative reinforcement or physical punishment works better. It doesn't, it just creates a dog that doesn't trust you, as you have proven yourself to be unpredictable. A dog can predict your actions better if you show them what is acceptable.. Positive training takes time, but with great results. Remember, slow and steady wins the race. Try to go to fast, and you could end up with a half trained dog who is untrusting, and unpredictable., and last time I checked those are qualities you don't want in a best friend.
